Thunderbolt is a painting permeated with the fascination with natural phenomena as well as a belief in the possibility of controlling them, which dates back to the 18th century. The work calls up associations with scientific experiments carried out by the likes of Benjamin Franklin and Václav Prokop Diviš, or Konrad Frankenstein Dippel’sexcursions into alchemy, including an entire array of later imaginings. Enlightenment- era ideas seemed to be mixed up with André Mysyrowicz’s contemporary experiments with directing lightning by laser beams. However, the exact spot where the lightning hits remains unknown and the effects of the strange discharge are as mysterious as the phenomenon itself.
