What we could observe in Adam Abel’s video work was the struggle of an individual in an unfavourable environment – in liquid surroundings. The process was accompanied by the muted sounds of the city – the overlapping sirens of ambulances and police cars, the drone of traffic – which seemed distant, as if coming from behind a glass wall. The work surrealistically reflected the hypothetical state of an overflow of stimuli in an agglomeration, which makes it impossible for an individual to exist in it. Paradoxically, the extreme conditions constituted a prompt to search for changes that would lead to symbolic cleansing and towards a primeval state of being – uncontaminated by pre-programmed patterns of functioning.
