Spirits of All Flowers, 2020

Artists Maryna Sakowska
Genre Object
Edition Survival 18

The inspiration behind this work was a fragment of the poem The Waste Land: Son of man / You cannot say, or guess, for you know only / A heap of broken images, where the sun beats, / And the dead tree gives no shelter, the cricket no relief, / And the dry stone no sound of water. The nature described here does not fulfil the task assigned to it by man – it is not able to nourish us, quench our thirst or give us shelter. The description reflects the apocalyptic mood of the entire poem, which also permeates our times. The artist is interested in the way in which man imposes text on nature and perceives nature through text (indirectly). He makes nature reflect his feelings and emotions through texts of culture. What is also important here is a reference to archaeological fossils, including in a formal sense. The fabric is reminiscent of a fragment of a split rock with fossils inside, made partly of natural materials (nature), and partly of artificial ones (manmade).
