We’re Sailing

The object created by Agnieszka Popek-Banach and Kamil Banach resembled a boat dragged onto the riverbank. Despite its small size, the object drew attention due to its deep black colour and the unusual shape; when viewed from the Piaskowy Bridge, it became simultaneously a boat and a coffin. The authors referred unequivocally to the mythical Styx, a river that separated the world of the living and the world of the dead, and to Charon, the ghostly ferryman who carried souls of the deceased ‘to the other side’ if one could afford it. We’re Sailing was a work about the unstoppable passage of time and the inevitable death; it reminded us that nothing lasts forever.
