ZEN VAUDEVILLE

The featured video documents my performance of one of the so-called Fluxus events. It simply reads “The sound of the shoe tapping,” and this laconic instruction of Zen Vaudeville was written by Ken Friedman from 1966. By recording two feet – an active one, beating out the rhythm, and a passive, motionless one, I discovered new meanings of this work. It is shown in the spacious, empty cellar in the basement of the station, enabling the loud sound of the stamping, “humanised” foot to travel freely. The banal activity can thus change into something unsettling.
